ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the causes and effects of smoking among secondary school students in selected secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government, Edo State. Specifically, the study examined causes of smoking among secondary school students of Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The study also examined the effect of smoking on the students in the secondary schools investigated and; lastly the study recommend and suggest possible ways of curbing tobacco smoking among the affected students and other intending to go into the act in Ovia North Local Government, Edo State. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 141 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that Tobacco smoking affect the students. Also, Some of the secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government smoke tobacco. Furthermore, There are risk associated with tobacco smoking. Lastly, Some female students smoke tobacco. The study recommend That parents should make it as a matter of priority to explore the family background, private activities and friendship selection of their children. And that preventive programmes involving stakeholders must be instituted in order to reduce the number of student smokers and realize the vision of better health for Nigerian students who are leaders of tomorrow
